Text Message Scam FAQ

How do I know if a text message is a scam?

Paste the text above or upload a screenshot and we'll analyze it instantly. Common red flags: urgent threats, unfamiliar links, requests to click to “verify” or “update” info, and numbers or domains that don't match the real company. Real USPS, IRS, and banks almost never ask you to click a link in an unsolicited text.

What is smishing?

Smishing is phishing via SMS. Scammers send texts that look like they're from a legitimate company — a bank, delivery service, or government agency — to trick you into clicking a malicious link, calling a fake number, or sharing personal info. It's one of the fastest-growing scam channels because texts feel more urgent and trustworthy than email.

I got a text from USPS about a package — is it real?

Almost certainly a scam. USPS does not send unsolicited texts asking you to click a link to “update” or “confirm” an address. If you're expecting a package, go directly to usps.com and enter your tracking number there. Never click the link in an unexpected delivery text.

What should I do if I clicked a scam link?

Don't panic — clicking alone usually isn't enough. But do: (1) not enter any info on the page that opened, (2) close the tab, (3) if you entered a password, change it everywhere you use it, (4) if you entered a credit card or bank info, call your bank. Scan your phone with a reputable security app if you installed anything.

Why do I keep getting scam texts?

Your number is probably in a list that's been sold between scam rings. Don't reply (even “STOP” confirms your number is active). Block each number as it comes, report them as junk in your messages app, and consider forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM) to help carriers block them.
